Translucent atmosphere

Cartagena Auditorium

This magnificent work by the SelgasCano architectural studio (José Selgas and Lucía Cano) has the spirit of the sea. The auditorium was designed longitudinally to fit within an old dock linked to the port and transformed into a promenade for locals to enjoy.

Extrual was given the honour of collaborating on a key aspect of the project: expressing the sea’s state of flux and translucent atmosphere into architecture. To achieve this, large curved slats in different colours were extruded to decorate the façade. It was sought to alter a geometric volume through changes in colour and sections, imitating a compact but changeable ocean surface.

SelgasCano also designed the 15th annual Serpentine Pavilion in London, and his “forest office” in Madrid, amongst many other projects that have earned him exhibitions at MoMA, the Guggenheim in New York, and the Bruges Triennial, where he has been nominated for a Pritzker Prize.
